Project Showcase: A Foul Bay Home Renovation

Foul Bay Victoria Bathroom Renovation

This was a wonderful Victoria home renovation project with our favourite clients. We worked with this lovely family on a major addition a few years ago (the youngest was in diapers) and we were thrilled and honoured when they asked us to help with their latest endeavor – a master suite for the momma (in law).

The ideal space would include a bed/sitting area and an ensuite bathroom.

Working in a finished house presents several challenges including access to existing plumbing without causing too much damage, and sufficient space that is located near an entrance to the home.

We were fortunate to be able to redesign an office and bedroom just off the front door that shared a common wall with an existing bathroom.

The original, skimpy, wrought iron exterior handrails were replaced with a beefy wood post and handrail system to give much more stability on the stairs (and looks terrific from the street).

Relocating the wall that divided the bedroom and office gave more space to the bed/sitting area yet provided ample room for a luxurious ensuite.

Salvaging and refinishing the fir flooring from the office to infill the enlarged sitting area kept the continuity with the rest of the home while giving that beautiful golden glow.

New heated tile on the ensuite floor is a favourite feature, and continuing the tile in the shower with a matching pebble accent also contributes to a seamless, spacious feel. Equipping a bathroom for a parent requires considerable planning at the framing stage to provide sufficient backing in the walls for grab bars, fold down shower seats, and more. There are many products that double as grab bars (e.g. towel bars, toilet paper holders, shower fixtures, and shampoo holders) so thinking ahead is critical.

Another wonderful find was the Ikea Pax Wardrobes – reasonably priced, efficient and attractive. These are great alternatives to traditional framed closets and are available in a variety of styles. Fortunately “hubby” is a pro at sourcing things online.

The materials chosen are all from a warm grey palette, with soft-white painted millwork and a beautiful classic marble counter with self-splash. Custom framed mirrors above the sinks fit perfectly and the combination of light fixtures and pots allowed the flexibility of light levels as desired – form and function at its best.

The overall effect is calm and inviting with some brilliant turquoise accents in the bed and lamps.

It is truly a pleasure to work with such wonderful people – this is a busy household with young children, hard working parents, and a slightly excitable dog. To create a restful oasis for the momma simply completes the picture – it’s perfect!
